1. You never take the time to practice or you hesitate putting in the DVD course. If the DVD courses are the way you chose to learn piano from home, it is important that you practice every week. If you are excited and determined about learning the piano and to learn it well, then finding time for lessons every week should not be a problem. However, if you aren't sure that learning piano is quite for you, you have a very busy schedule, or you have a lot of noise in your house, then making time to learn piano might be more difficult.

2. Paying way too much for your piano lessons.  When taking private lessons, you are probably spending over $1,500 a year. The average piano lesson costs between $30-$40, for one lesson per week, that equals $120-$160 a month, or $1,440-$1,920 a year! Most DVD piano courses cost anywhere from less than $100 to $150, and as a one-time payment only. That is equivalent to paying for just one month of private lessons! Also, online piano lessons cost even less than DVD courses, but DVD courses are more beneficial and comprehensive.

3. You spend most of your time asking a lot of questions during your lesson. Lessons are usually 30-minute sessions if private piano lessons are more for you. You probably have lots of questions if you are just beginning to learn the piano! With  a book or going online, most answers to your basic piano questions can usually be found in. Certainly it is very important to spend the majority of your lesson learning and playing songs, learning how to read music, and improve basic techniques. 4. You have a lot of interruptions while you practice. If you are learning at home with DVD courses, it is better and more beneficial to do your lessons in a quiet room where there isn't a lot going on to distract you. You can really decrease the quality of your lesson by trying to learn the piano in the main room of your home or somewhere with a lot of noise. You must find a nice, peaceful, private place where you can really give the lessons your full attention.

5. During your lesson you only practice the songs and not the techniques. First learn the proper piano techniques, because it will be very hard to learn any song without it. To prevent any strain or injury to your hands or fingers, working on the correct hand, finger positions, and maintaining good posture will definitely help you play songs more quickly and smoothly. You will also look professional while playing!

Reading music has many benefits, especially when you don't have a teacher sitting right next to you explaining what all the notes are. Certainly you will be able to practice the piano more efficiently on your own and will be able to double check the music you are playing.
